In early 2020, COVID-19 infections exploded around the world, forcing humanity to drastically reduce contact with others and to confine ourselves to restricted areas, like our homes. While Mikiya Takimoto’s professional life has been in photography, he too of course stopped work across the board, including advertisements and video commercials involving large numbers of people, and was no longer able to engage in his usual creative work where he flew around the world and filmed and photographed with large pieces of equipment. So, he began photographing wildflowers, feeling in the small rape flowers blooming on a riverbank that he once happened to come across the same natural force as the powerful life force of planet earth he had seen in the uninhabitable remote places he had photographed till then. Finding moments of life continuing uninterrupted in familiar flowering plants, he spent 3 years exploring the microcosms alive inside them to complete his LUMIÈRE (French for "light") series. Please take a look at LUMIÈRE, Takimoto’s first new photo collection in about 10 years, which ponders the cycles of life and the coexistence of living things with planet earth.
I moved down lower to get approach the perspective of the flowers and insects, and as I bent down I peered into the viewfinder. There, I found various life forms desperately seeking the light. That area of restricted movement where I was headed turned out to contain microcosms. My gaze of interest shifted from the macro to the micro. I realized that on closer inspection, a microcosm could also be an infinite expanse akin to a universe. Mikiya Takimoto - Afterword of this book.
