This extraordinary collection consists of two series of photographs that have been Mikiya Takimoto’s lifework: Space, a collection of portraits of the new space shuttle which were taken during numerous visits to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, and Land, in which he has documented the ancient tranquility of the living Earth. The laws of life and the universe, expressed through the interplay of the two completely different series of images.
LAND SPACE is none other than a stunning playful invasion of the boundary between the primordial LAND of earth and SPACE as it is unfolded to us by leading−edge technologies. Mikiya Takimoto didn’t take photographs of the starlit sky variety that link us directly to space. What he puts into visualization is the tension that exists on the threshold between the two. The enormous power that detains us as we attempt to escape from LAND into SPACE. The tremendous power of resistance we meet as we attempt to plunge back to LAND from SPACE. Because of the graphic traces they leave, we awaken to the wonders of LAND and dream of the wonders of SPACE. Keiichiro Hirano (novelist) — From text contributed to the book
