Photographer Mikiya Takimoto was invited to participate as one of the collaborating artists in the special exhibition Shōsōin THE SHOW. With special permission, Takimoto came face-to-face with the Shōsōin Repository, which has safeguarded its treasures for more than 1,300 years, and created this volume of monochrome photographs capturing its presence.
In the darkness, the Shōsōin emerged, illuminated by light from the direction of the moon. The sight evoked thoughts of a time when there were no artificial lights at night, and of how people must once have looked upon the repository beneath the moonlight.
The Shōsōin Shōsō has stood quietly for some 1,300 years. I experienced its presence up close, almost as if I could feel it beneath my skin.
Stepping inside, I was deeply moved by the countless pillars and foundation stones that have supported the structure throughout the ages. As I contemplated the passage of eternal time, an image arose in my mind: the scene of generations past, quietly safeguarding its precious treasures.
The Shōsōin faces east.
Since the time of its construction, nothing has changed: as the sun sets in the west, the full moon rises in the eastern sky.
At the beginning of 2025, I directed light toward the Shōsōin from the direction in which the moon rises. The azekura structure emerged sharply from the darkness, while its shadows quietly disappeared into the pitch-black night.
The stark contrast between light and shadow revealed a new expression of the building, transcending time.
Perhaps, long ago, people too gazed quietly upward at its form as it emerged beneath the light of the moon.
